My early sewing years...

When I was about 11 years old, I was lucky enough to have three wonderful women in my life.

My Mum, who taught me to sew outfits for my Sindy doll and buttons on my school blouses; a cousin who had the patience to show me how to knit and my Needlework teacher at school who took me through all the processes of sewing with needle and thread and a sewing machine which opened my eyes to so much more.

I’m thankful to these three amazing women because it has led me into a world of creative stitches which I love!

The freedom to stitch...

In my late fifties I had the opportunity to retire - what to do with all this wonderful time I’d been given?!

I spent time redesigning the spare bedroom to create a studio; where I worked on designs and played with stitches and fabric and enjoyed my creative freedom and passion for embroidery and textiles.

“But then I thought; can there be more….?”

Fortitude & finesse...

I felt that my embroidery was lacking finesse, and I love learning new things and so I enrolled on an Embroidery and Textile course for two years and completed my City & Guilds Grade III with the School of Stitched Textiles.

The course took me out of my comfort zone, it gave me an insight into other avenues of embroidery and textiles, and it taught me more about myself and my aspirations.

I learnt to look at how I can be more creative with fabric, thread and colour. I really enjoyed completing my pieces inspired by ceramicists and architecture. I’m never without a new idea/design – in fact, sometimes I think I have too many but that’s a good thing right!?

Reviews

"I had the pleasure of mentoring Janet during her time studying City & Guilds accredited Skill Stage 3 Hand Embroidery with School of Stitched Textiles. Throughout her studies, she demonstrated creativity, technical skill, and a deep passion for textile arts. Her ability to translate inspiration into beautifully executed pieces showcases both her artistic vision and her mastery of embroidery techniques.

Janet has a keen eye for detail and a thoughtful approach to design. Her dedication to developing her personal style and pushing creative boundaries is evident in the work she produced for her course portfolio. In addition to their technical abilities, they are highly professional and organised.

I have no doubt that Janet will bring the same level of enthusiasm and expertise to her professional practice as she did to her studies. Her work is an asset to the textile community, and I highly recommend her to anyone looking for high-quality, handcrafted textile art."
